Excursion: AGROPOLI:
Agropoli with its sandy beaches is 6kms further south of Paestum. It has a natural harbour and is at the southern end of the gulf of Salerno. Established by the Greeks in the 7th century, the name Agropoli immediately reminds one of the Acropolis in Athens. In fact this name here as well as in Athens is attributed to the elevated position (Acropolis = high city). You can access the historic centre of Agropoli via a steep flight of steps and an ancient gateway, here terraces gaze out across the dazzling waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Agropoli also borders the National Park of the Cilento. There are some excellent restaurants and street cafes in the town to enjoy a moment to savour the atmosphere.
