Excursion: ROME CASTLES HALF DAY
PANORAMIC TOUR OF ROME CASTLES HALF DAY (4-5 hours)
Roma-Grottaferrata-Frascati-Castelgandolfo-Nemi-Roma
Departure at 9.00 am from Rome to reach Grottaferrata at 10 am or thereabout, here the visit is focused on the San Nilo Abbey, this castle was built in the 1004 over the ruins of a pre-existing Roman Villa which was fortified and embellished by Giuliano da Sangallo. The journey now is leading to Frascati, which is the most important among the little town of the Roman Castles area. Where besides the wonderful architecture and beauty of the Cathedral and palaces, such as Villa Aldobrandini, which also celebrated for its fountains and water games, is it possible to have a taste of the natural products coming from its countryside with very renowned vineyards. Lunch here is suggested in a typical restaurant with panoramic view. Nemi sits next to the small volcanic lake of the same name and, as well as its stunning, leafy location, is famed for its strawberries. Visitors in May may like to take part in the 'Sagra delle Fragola', the famous strawberry festival, and eat as many as you can! The strawberries are more precisely 'fragoline di bosco' which literally means they grow wild in the woods. As the name suggests they are extremely small, more like regular berries. May is the month for the strawberry harvest at Nemi and related celebrations last until the end of June.
